Situated in the Upper Engadine and founded in the 19th century, St. Moritz is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world. St. Moritz is one of the favorite meeting places for the jet-set and was the birthplace of winter tourism. It is the only resort of Switzerland to have hosted the Olympics. Perhaps the most popular resort in the Grisons, St. Moritz attracts thousands of tourists every year. There is a lake surrounded by woods, mountain trails and ski slopes. Olympic champions are trained here from around the world. There's also the oldest bobsleigh track, dating back to 1890, and a series of sporting events at the highest level: including the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow, which is held every January on the frozen lake.
The 4 ski areas for downhill skiing include Corvatsch Furtschellas Silvaplana, Corviglia, Diavolezza, Pontresina offer 55 lifts and ski lifts with 350 km of ski runs, a halfpipe and snowboard park. There are 180 km of tracks for cross country skiing, 150 km of winter walking trails, hiking with skis on high mountain glaciers, descents on the bobsleigh, hang-gliding and paragliding.
