Valmalenco
The downstream side is the larger of the Valtellina. It is placed north of Sondrio, leaving behind the typical terraces of vineyards that surround the province Lombarda. The Valmalenco is a beautiful valley which has preserved the ancient values and has not sold its natural environment to the proliferation of second homes which have damaged the landscape of many mountains.
The Valmalenco is a paradise of snow where you descend around 40 km of ski slopes, between 2336 m. altitude and 1000 m. The slopes are loved especially by families but they can satisfy even the most expert skiers, for whom the Thoeni piste is not to be missed, with walls along it this piste is very challenging and exciting.
Excellent lifts serve 40 km of pistes, part of which is covered by snow cannons. Alpe Palùbe, reached by cable car Snow Eagle, is one of the most capacious in Europe, with cabins capable of carrying 160 people. Caspoggio Church and ski resorts are established by tradition. There are excellent opportunities for students of Ski Mountaineering, for example, that lead to Pizzo Scalino. You can make fascinating excursions along the tracks of the Lanza, the Palù where a ciruit runs around the frozen lake, and between the villages of St. Joseph and Chiareggio. In summer, the cross-country skiing routes become used for mountain biking.
