Enclosed by Val Maira to the south, the Po Valley to the north and the Guil Valley to the west and dominated by its group of Monviso, Varaita offers a small ski area made up of 20 km of slopes and approximately 5 km of Nordic skiing slopes.
The district is characterized by the stations Pontechianale, Bellino, Casteldelfino, Sampeyre and Valmala, with several pistes above the line of the forest. The downhill slopes of Pontechianale, at 2400 meters, are quite challenging, while those of Sampeyre Bellino and are more suited to beginners and intermediate skiers.
During the summer the valley enjoys it's greatest tourist success, especially in the province of Cuneo. In neighboring valleys you can find some climbing walls at the amphitheater of the castle and Martinet, in the Valley Chianale.

The Monviso, King of Stone

The Monviso, with its 3841 meters high, stands out clearly above the Alpi Cozie constitutes its highest summit, and famous. No western mountains of the Alps, except the Matterhorn, is known as this huge rocky pyramid visible from almost anywhere away from the plains of Milan in the days more terse. Rises and majestic and isolated, although not reaching € 4000 for only 150 meters, it still shows the appearance of a mountain rather harsh and demanding on which were measured some of the greatest names in history.

Mezzalama trophy, the pure ski alpinism

On 19 April 2009 will be disputed, the 17th edition of the Trofeo Mezzalama, beginning at Breuil Cervinia, through the Val d'Ayas and ends in Gressoney Valley. A marathon with classic equipment, whether international, starting in line open to teams of three athletes / and roped. A challenge along a difficult path that winds especially over three thousand meters, passing in two even four thousand. The pre-enrollment for the year 2009 came to 397 teams, compared with 260 two years ago to 115, 2005. Each team has three athletes. A contract is regulated by FISI (Italian Federation of Winter Sports) and the 'ISMF (International Ski Mountaineering Federation).
