Sunday, April 28th the Mezzalama Trophy returns
The XXII edition of the Mezzalama Trophy will start tomorrow morning at 5.30 am, from the town of Breuil - Cervinia, the final test of the European La Mountaineering circuit.Originally planned for today, the race was postponed by one day to allow, after the bad weather of the last few days, the mountain guides and the volunteers to restore the route at high altitude, especially in the steepest sections of the Castore and the Naso del Lyskamm .
To the traditional peaks of Castore and Naso, the historic race born in 1933 will see this year, as happened in 1978, the passage of the route on a third four thousand: instead of starting the descent towards Gressoney as soon as you cross the Naso, from altitude 3900 athletes go back up the slopes to the Lys pass up to the Roccia della Scoperta (4177 m) to remember the feat of the seven mountain people of Gressoney who in 1778 reached this small rocky island that emerges from the glaciers between Valle d'Aosta and Valais , eight years before the conquest of Mont Blanc.
There will be 283 teams, made up of athletes from 18 different countries, starting tomorrow's dawn: two hundred and sixty-seven will give life to the men's challenge, 16 to that of women. Eve favorites are the Alpini of the Army Sports Center, winners of the last edition of 2017; Robert Antonioli, Michele Boscacci and Matteo Eydallin - the last two components with Damiano Lenzi of the team that established itself two years ago while Antonioli got his hands on the Ski Mountaineering World Cup a few weeks ago - they will wear bib number 1. After imposed in 2011 and having fought for victory until last year, the Catalan ski-running star Kilian Jornet Burgada will try again in a new formation with the Austrians Jakob Hermann and Armin Hoefli. The two Swiss Werner Marthi and Martin Anthamatten, who in 2017 with Kilian came just two minutes from victory, will this time be at the starting line with William Boffelli. Among women the team to beat will be the one formed by the French Axelle Mollaret, Lorna Bonnel and the blue Alba De Silvestro.
